This is the true story of how I lived a healthy life for 48 years. The only problem I had was that I did not have a pulse in my arms, but I knew this since the time I was called up for my two years military service in an infantry battalion. Thirty years later, after qualifying as an electrician with rail transport, a young doctor did no know referred me to a specialist because she wanted to know what the cause was for the low pulse in my arms. It was only after testing that doctors realized I had a time bomb in my body and no one could believe that I was still alive or even survived childbirth. The doctors discovered that the arteries to my arms were closed from birth and I only had one artery to my brain from my aorta, where normal people have two. The problem was that the one artery to my brain had a narrowing and a stroke was imminent if I did not get an operation immediately. Such an operation was never done before I was on the operating table for six-and-a-half hours. When the ventilator was removed after eight hours, I stopped breathing and had a vision that changed my life Elsa and I were only married for eight months when we heard the shocking news. We decided to tell the story of the miracles God performed in both our lives. Our love, commitment and endurance were tested severely throughout the ordeal, but we persevered and our relationship is even stronger today.

I was really interested in reading "The Battle" as I knew Elsa since being in high school together with her, so I decided to order the book and have it shipped over to Australia where I live. From cover to cover this book carried me away by what Gerhard & Elsa had gone through. At times I had to put it down to get control over my own emotions as it felt as if I was present as a silent observer throughout the whole ordeal. As I read through the book I became more and more aware of how much we have to be thankful for, not to take so many things for granted. Having it written from both Elsa and Gerhard's perspectives gave a very good explanation as to how each of them experienced the situation in their own way.
"The Battle" will definitely find its way to some of my South African friends here 'down under', friends who will surely be touched just as much as I have been.
Elsa, Gerhard, may God bless you. Keep up the good work!
